Review of: Risky/Safety
This is: Anime
Availability: R1 DVD (AN Entertainment)
Review by: ISOE
Risky/Safety is a sweetly bizarre little piece of work. And when I say little, I mean it. Each episode is about 10-12 minutes long, allowing AN Entertainment to stuff 8 episodes on a DVD.
The plot revolves around... well, I'm not quite sure yet. It starts off with schoolgirl Moe (voiced by Maaya Sakamoto) down in the dumps because she believes she's been jilted by her boyfriend. Enter Risky, a destructive little shinigami, come to claim Moe's soul. See, Risky is sent to claim the souls of those who have lost all hope. But Moe isn't all that far gone - she can still crack a small smile as she recalls her boyfriend. Alas, that smile proves to be Risky's undoing, as she vanishes in a puff of smoke and is replaced by - the sweet, bespectacled little angel, Safety!
At this point the show's focus shifts to Risky and Safety. You see, Risky and Safety share the same body - whenever negative emotions are present, Risky appears, and when good vibes are a-flowing, Safety takes over. What's really hilarious is that neither of them can stand each other (although Safety's far too polite to say what she really thinks of Risky) and are constantly competing to see which of them will earn more heaven or hell points and eventually graduate from apprentice status. My favorite part is when Risky and Safety both receive notes from their respective mentors (King of Hell in Risky's case, Chief Angel in Safety's) - when Risky briefly takes over, she scrawls insults on Safety's note, but all Safety can write on Risky's note is a traditional polite letter greeting (i.e. "Dear Risky, Genki desuka? How is the weather, etc...." ) in flawless hiragana. It has to be seen to be believed.
Risky/Safety is by no means an intellectual anime, unless one wishes to ponder on the deeper philosophical significance of the multiple personality complex... nahhh. Just sit back and enjoy this zany bit of fluff. It's in easily digestible, bite-size pieces, so you can have a little or a lot at a time.
