Major Characters
The story takes place in a small European town called Mühlenberg, where Saga and her grandmother live. The season fairies usually live in a world separate from ours, but their apprentices come to our world to train briefly. Each apprentice has a magic seed, which they are supposed to plant somewhere when they first arrive in the human world, and are assigned to find something called "Twinkle" (kirameki) in order to make their magic seeds grow and bloom.

(in order of appearance:)

Saga Bergman*
Saga Saga Bergman is a responsible and well-organized twelve-year-old. Despite her practical nature, Saga has a romantic soul and the rare talent of being able to see the season fairies.

Saga works part-time in the town's coffee shop, Little Me. Her boss, Mr Luchino, often teases her about how she seems to work harder than he does. She enjoys mixing new coffee blends and takes a new blend up to the town's gatekeeper, Henry, every morning.

An orphan, Saga has lived with her grandmother Regina since she was nine, following the death of her mother in a traffic accident. After her mother's death, Saga couldn't bear to have her mother's piano in the house, so it was sold to the town's music store. Saga occasionally visits the store to play the piano when the manager is out.

Ingrid Bergman*
Ingrid was a famous concert pianist, and Saga has inherited her talent. In addition to performing, Ingrid wrote music as well, and one of Saga's most precious possessions is a piano piece that her mother wrote. Saga remembers her mother as always smiling.

Grandmother Regina
Grandmother Regina is Saga's maternal grandmother. She's a little puzzled that her granddaughter has suddenly taken to talking to thin air, but she's a kind and understanding lady. She cooks a lot of stew.

Sugar
Sugar is a hyperactive apprentice snow fairy. She moved in with Saga after her magic seed was accidentally planted in Saga's toy piano. Sugar wants to become a famous snow fairy like her mother.
Sugar's instrument is the piccolo.

Greta
How to put this kindly... Greta's a nut. She is the only daughter of one of the richest men in town, and loves to be the center of attention. She has declared herself as Saga's rival, and goes to bizarre lengths to challenge Saga to even more bizarre competitions.

Anne and Norma
Anne and Norma are Saga's classmates and best friends. Norma is outgoing, energetic and good at art, and keeps up with the latest fads; Anne is a good writer, a little more shy than Norma, and quite conservative in her taste. They both count on Saga to plan their outings together.

Phil
Phil is a classmate of Saga, Ann and Norma. He loves science and has a secret workshop beside the town's scrap yard, where he conducts his elaborate experiments with the help of his friends, Jean and Alain.

Phil is often seen around town lugging a handcart, which he uses to collect discarded items for his experiments. He's always trying to get Saga to help him with his experiments. Saga usually brushes off his requests, but when she does help him, they make quite a good team.

Pepper
Pepper is a calm-natured, soft-spoken wind fairy apprentice. She lives in a flower bed in an animal hospital. Pepper loves all animals (even Joe the Crow), and can understand and talk with them.
Pepper's instrument is the harp.

Salt
Salt is a temperamental sun fairy apprentice. He starts off training to become a sun fairy like his father, but after hanging out with Turmeric, he decides to become a cloud fairy instead.
Salt's instrument is the trumpet.

Ginger
Ginger is a rain fairy. She looks stern, but she's actually very kind and fond of the little apprentice fairies. The Elder Fairy has a huge crush on her, which vexes her no end. She herself likes Turmeric, the Cloud Fairy.
Ginger's instrument is the violin.

The Elder
The Elder is the most experienced and respected of all the season fairies (except maybe by Ginger, who is just slightly creeped out by his crush on her). To the apprentice fairies, he's sort of like a school headmaster who keeps track of their marks.
The Elder has a conductor's baton and is able to control any kind of weather.

Turmeric
Turmeric is a cloud fairy. He's only recently become a full-fledged season fairy, so he's a bit obsessed with perfecting the art of creating clouds. Despite his dedication to his craft, he occasionally takes time out to give advice to the little apprentice fairies. He often seems oblivious to Ginger's affections, but he does seem to enjoy her company. His good looks make him popular among the female fairies.
Turmeric's instrument is the cello.

*Yes, that is her name. I've seen it translated as Belmont, but in one of the last few episodes it's clearly indicated that her name is Bergman.
