"Tokyo Godfathers," directed by Satoshi Kon and produced by studio Mad House I recently saw "Tokyo Godfathers," and I really enjoyed it. I haven't seen "Millennium Actress" (also directed by Satoshi Kon) yet but now I would like to. This movie is about three homeless people who find a baby thrown out with the trash on Christmas Eve. Torn between taking care of the baby and turning it into the police, thay attempt to track down the child's parents and get involved in all sorts of convoluted plots along the way. The main characters are Gin, a man who used to have a family; Hana, a gay man with a colorful past; and Miyuki, the runaway daughter of the police chief. They all have their virtues and failings, but they are a family and draw strength from each other. Sometimes serious, sometimes hilarious, this seemingly simple story is filled with action and some violence (hence the PG-13 rating), but it has a good feeling to it, and a surprising ending. It's definitely a drama, not a comedy, so I'd reccommend it to the proper age group, 13 and above, as a film to watch and discuss as a family.
