I'm a sucker for historical shows, be they anime or live action. I love costuming from just about every historical period, and I'm an amateur medieval historian, whether it's Europe or the East. Rouroni Kenshin is historical fantasy, but it's the best samurai show I've seen yet. It's easy to care about the characters, and the storyline, while long, is the time-honored Quest to Save the Country while Guarding the People You Care About. Kenshin is the perfect man; kind, thoughtful, honest, trustworthy, and a majorly kick-butt swordsman. What's not to love? All of his friends and companions have their own stories, and watching them all develop, overlap and intertwine is the main joy of the series. The animation is excellent, especially the movement in most of the fight scenes, but it's not serious all the time; the characters go chibi and there's a lot of humor written into what would otherwise be a pretty dark storyline. I'd have to issue a blood warning, for though Kenshin does not kill, there are plenty of bad guys that do. The series is not too bad, but watch out for the OVAs "Trust" and "Betrayal" - they get a high splatter rating.
