My Gallery

Welcome to the Grand Opening of my original works gallery. To tell you the truth, some of this stuff has been laying around for ages, but more and more of it is becoming current. :P

The BFA Project:
My BFA project is a card game an old friend created years ago for her role playing game. It's an elvish card game combining a matching game and gin rummy... Ok, so it's difficult to explain in one sentence, but I can link you to the rules. It is a set deck (none of this collecting cards in packs and hoping you get what you want) of ten suites, with 16 cards in each suite. As I progress, I'll add more sketches, color comps and finals. So far, I have everything down on one page, but I'll be seperating things out and making it more pretty in a bit. Click HERE to see it.

Air: Cloud, Wind, Feather, Lightning
Earth: Pebble, Gem, Field, Mountain
Water: Rain, Ice, River, Ocean
Fire: Smoke, Candle, Ash, Flame
Celestial: Stars, Moons, Comets, Suns

Plant: Fungi, Seedling, Flower, Tree
Life: Insect, Fish/Reptile, Bird, Mammal
Magic: Book, Potion, Wand, Mirror
War: Dagger, Spear, Bow, Sword
Dragon: Air, Earth, Water, Fire

This recently won second place in the monochrome/pen and ink category as Nan Desu Kan. I did it years ago, and still want to clean it up a bit and try coloring it on the computer. Anyway, here's this Chinese Dragon.

Alice in Wonderland
I modeled this after a playing card, as I saw Alice and the Cheshire cat as the only two "real people" in Wonderland. Both have free will, and use it. That can't really be said of any of the other denizens of Wonderland. The piece is done in colored pencil. (Yes, it took for-freaking-ever, but I had fun, and it turned out pretty well.)

Details of Alice and the Cheshire Cat.

Herne the Hunter
I personally do not feel my first attempt at oil painting turned out so well. I still have a LOT to learn before I consider oil a friendly medium.

Promotional poster for the film Richard the Third
I found an interesting blend of symbols by turning the wedding ring into a crown. Richard had come to the throne by dubious means, and needed to marry Anne to cement his legal claim to the throne. It wasn't love, it was his attempt to legitimize his crown. The piece is done in acrylic, and I had no idea how much dried paint was getting mixed in with the fresh in the skin tone of the hand until it lumped all over the place. Of course, our professors tell us to sell our work, so I just pretended I had done it on purpose to show Richard's deformities on a small scale. ;)

Book cover for The Name if the Rose by Umberto Eco.
While in medieval style, this was an assignment, so I'm putting it here with the rest of them. I enjoyed the book, but I also figured it was an easy out for a project. I already had tons of practice doing medieval illumination. What I hadn't thought much on was the scale. This monster is 16 by 20 inches, which is WAY too big to work in goache (opaque watercolor) and with this level of detail. I loved doing the little border animals, but it was a mistake to do this piece so dang large.

I've still got lots of unfinished projects, most of which are too close to completion to ignore. I'll just have to do them on my own time as I'll be repeating classes and won't be able to use them as assignments. Ah well. ;)
